About Us

FIRST Robotics is The Southfield Public Schools Engineering Academy’s catalyst for involving our community and its youth into the study of science and technology. The Engineering Academy was started in 1999 sharing many of the same goals as FIRST. Team 94 has been at Southfield High School since 1998 with the Lear Corporation as our partner since day one. We are currently a FIRST team of 42 students while the academy consists of 60 students. The academy offers three strands of study and two of the three revolve around the concept of FIRST. Students can study Manufacturing, Design, or NASA Aerospace. Manufacturing students study Electronics and Programming, Manufacturing Processes, Quality Control, Mechanical and Fluid Systems. We also have a design strand that includes CADD, Vehicular Design, Animation and Architecture. Our third strand is NASA which involves the study of flight concepts, model rocketry, robotics, alternative energy and global research.

For the Southfield Engineering Academy, FIRST is a challenge and not our curriculum. We take our goals in the classroom seriously and we are willing attend school 6 days a week for 8-12 hours to exemplify the critical message of FIRST. Since our involvement in FIRST, our academy has developed a myriad of challenges to inspire our youth to study engineering. We compete in national rocketry competitions, county drafting competitions and continue to build partnerships within the community. After the FIRST season, we will continue our latest challenge as contenders in the Convergence Education Foundation’s Innovative Vehicle Design (IVD) contest. Our curriculum is enhanced by the SAE “A World in Motion” mentoring program partnering with the DENSO Corporation and the Ford Partnership for advanced studies curriculum PAS. Team 94 is proud to compete with a 95% student built robot for their eleventh season. Our twelfth year will represent a “drop in the bucket” toward our future involvement with FIRST.
